Welcome Home

Questions I
cannot answer
march in formation
toward me
swollen eyes
trembling hands
they envelop me
with the caution
of hugging a tiger
bearing teeth
my skin prickles
and it would be
easier if I was set on fire
Burn all the memory away
I open my mouth
wide
wide enough to let
words spill out over
teeth and lips
and I try not to
bite down and tell you
its going to be okay
monsters won’t disappear with the light
prayer candles exist to
invite the words
and I choke
you tell me all the things I missed
and ask and ask and
ask about everything
that has me gaunt and swollen
do me a favor
take down the welcome sign
turn it into a mat
put it outside your front door
let me wipe my feet on it
open your arms
without expectations
I promise
I won’t always be teeth baring
smoldering heat
I will open my mouth
with burning desire
over and over and over and over
again
make eye contact
listen
wait for me

Welcome

I declare this home
my heart knew it all along
my brain played catch up

Waiting for the Train

I have four minutes
my watch is set
a quarter past the last nine minutes
I hear the whistle
and steel
grinding against
steel
wheels on tracks
leading back to you
Baby I’m sorry
I lost track of time
gathering the last of my things
my well worn soul
and blood stained letters
too much time spent
cleaning up my mess here
all I wanted was to
sit and watch scenery
go by
without my gun
desert beige on my way
back to wet green
back to fertile gardens
and flowers in bloom
where you can
drink the air.
Baby I’ll be there
we will pour the
thick midwestern air
into plastic champagne flutes
we’ll toast to each other
and get drunk on everything
we left behind

Helicopter

Cut the sky
tear it to shreds
closed eyes
bare witness to a terrible truth
that you pay for
all your sins
the devil waits
open handed
taking more
mortar from your bricked house
The whirring
the wind will blow your house down
and the wolf will comfort you
smirking
blades rip into the sky
talons forcing the rest of your insides
outside
the wind
that will forever
threaten

Nature

the wind through leaves howls
desert floor gets lifted up
swallowing the sand

You're Next - Your Number is up

Just a head’s up
just letting you know where you stand
I’m not here
to reason
to negotiate
see your side of the story.
I’m here to kill
or be killed
I have expert aim
and an ax to grind
You’re Next
I’m here to make swift
and just decisions
I don’t care how many
dead bodies
I need to step over
to leave this place
I’m prepared
I’m hardened
conditioned
YOU’RE NEXT
